The Murfreesboro City Council voted to proceed with a lawsuit against a landfill owner after receiving over 2,000 complaints through an online Odor Management Portal created by Twin Sun.
The simple one-page Odor Management Portal helped Murfreesboro residents report odors believed to originate from the Middle Point Landfill or other city infrastructure. Since the site’s launch in September 2021, the City of Murfreesboro has received over 2,000 odor complaints.
Last week the Murfreesboro City Council met with their legal counsel to discuss the issue. Following that discussion, the council voted 7-0 to file a lawsuit against the owner of the landfill.
The odor has reportedly plagued residents for years. The city launched the Odor Management Portal to streamline the odor reporting process. In addition to the odor complaints, the city’s lawsuit provides water sample evidence of the landfill’s leachate discharge contaminating nearby Stones River with toxic polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) chemicals.
