TLDR

FOG Enterprises ran two rent-to-own furniture brands on legacy e-commerce sites built atop CMS Made Simple, with outdated PHP, security vulnerabilities, and a single snowflake server that couldn't scale for seasonal traffic. Twin Sun evaluated their options objectively and recommended using a licensed RTO e-commerce framework rather than a more expensive custom build, then modernized it into a scalable platform running both brands from a single configurable code base. The fully Dockerized system on AWS Elastic Beanstalk can now handle promotional traffic spikes, while Excel-based bulk import tools let marketing managers update hundreds of products without developer involvement. When inherited code caused performance problems at launch, Twin Sun implemented caching and query optimizations that brought page loads under 300 milliseconds.

The Challenge

FOG Enterprises ran two rent-to-own furniture brands on legacy e-commerce sites built atop CMS Made Simple, with outdated PHP, security vulnerabilities, and a single snowflake server that couldn’t scale for seasonal traffic.

Our Solution

Twin Sun’s initial quote proposed a complete rebuild in Ruby on Rails. The client, facing budget constraints, found a partner in the RTO industry willing to license their existing e-commerce code base built on October CMS. Twin Sun evaluated this option objectively and determined it would indeed save time and money while delivering the capabilities FOG Enterprises needed.

This recommendation established trust early. Rather than pushing a more expensive custom build, Twin Sun acknowledged when a licensed framework made more sense for the client’s business.

The technical approach addressed several key challenges. First, running two branded e-commerce sites from a single code base. Twin Sun made branding fully configurable through environment variables, controlling everything from logos and color schemes to SEO metadata with a single configuration change. The database was shared between brands, with specific tables supporting brand-specific filtering for products, orders, and store locations. This gave marketing managers the ability to see and analyze both brands together while maintaining distinct customer-facing experiences.

Second, enabling non-technical marketers to manage complex product catalogs. Rent-to-own products have dozens of attributes including multiple pricing options, product dimensions, categories, and SEO descriptions. Twin Sun built an administrative interface designed for marketers, not developers. For bulk changes, they implemented Excel spreadsheet import and export, allowing marketing managers to update hundreds of products with a find-and-replace operation rather than clicking through web forms.

Third, building infrastructure that could handle promotional traffic spikes. Twin Sun fully Dockerized the environment, eliminating the snowflake server problem. Developers could spin up identical development, testing, and production environments. More importantly, the infrastructure could now scale horizontally through AWS Elastic Beanstalk during Black Friday, Memorial Day, and other high-traffic promotional periods.

The project ran on a fixed-price agreement, which gave FOG Enterprises the budgetary certainty they needed while transferring development risk to Twin Sun. Weekly email updates documented completed features, provided step-by-step testing instructions with screenshots, and outlined upcoming priorities, giving the client continuous visibility without requiring scheduled calls.

The Results

The platform launched during a slow period to allow for production validation. Within days, performance issues emerged from the inherited code base, including N+1 query problems and a homepage that required 700-800 database queries to render. Twin Sun addressed these systematically, implementing database optimizations, strategic caching layers, and asynchronous loading for below-the-fold content. Page load times dropped to under 300 milliseconds.

The caching strategy evolved as business needs changed. Initial whole-page caching gave way to section-based caching when marketing wanted to implement personalized product recommendations. Administrative controls allowed marketing managers to manually invalidate caches when needed, giving them confidence in the system.

Both A-plus Rentals and Easy Rentals now operate on a modern, maintainable platform that scales for seasonal traffic, supports flexible pricing models unique to rent-to-own retail, and gives marketing teams the tools to manage inventory efficiently. The investment in reproducible infrastructure continues to pay dividends, with development environments spinning up quickly and production scaling automatically during high-demand periods.
