TLDR
Medical professionals came to Twin Sun with an idea for a quick-reference treatment app for urgent care providers. They had clinical expertise but no technical background. Twin Sun selected practical technologies, built a sophisticated admin portal for managing complex medical content, and delivered the project with weekly iterative builds. The app launched quickly and began generating consistent revenue. Since then, Blox Medical has returned multiple times for feature enhancements as the product found its market, including bulk university licensing, CME credit tracking, and tiered subscriptions. The partnership is defined by mutual trust and transparent communication.
The Challenge
A husband-and-wife team of medical professionals identified a gap in how urgent care providers access treatment information for common ailments. They had a clear vision for a quick-reference application but no technical background. They needed a development partner who could turn their clinical expertise into a working product.
Our Solution
Twin Sun scoped the project around the client’s goals, selecting practical technologies like Active Admin for the content management backend. The application required a sophisticated admin portal capable of handling complex medical content including images, PDFs, videos, multi-segment topics, and links to external resources. We delivered iterative weekly builds so the client could see steady progress and provide feedback throughout development.
The Results
Blox Medical launched shortly after development wrapped and began generating consistent revenue. The partnership has continued with multiple rounds of feature enhancements as the product found its market, including bulk university licensing, CME credit tracking, and tiered subscription levels. The relationship is built on mutual trust and transparent communication, with Blox Medical returning to Twin Sun repeatedly as their product evolves.
A Medical Idea Ready to Build
Both medical professionals kept running into the same problem in urgent care settings: there was no fast, accessible way to pull up treatment protocols for common ailments. They decided to build a solution themselves. The challenge was that neither had a technical background. They needed a team that could take a clinical concept and turn it into software without requiring them to learn development along the way.
When they came to Twin Sun, we started where we always start: understanding the goal. What were they trying to accomplish? Who would use it? From there, we gave them a realistic picture of what it would take and kicked off development.
Solving the Content Problem
The core technical challenge was the content management system. This was not a simple blog or text-based app. The medical content Blox Medical needed to manage included images, PDFs, videos, multiple segments per topic, and links to external clinical resources. All of it needed to be editable by the client through an admin portal so they could curate and update content without developer involvement.
We landed on Active Admin as the backend solution. It was simple, reliable, and well-suited to the scope of the project. We were not going to recommend a complex custom CMS when a proven tool would do the job well.
Iterative Development, Visible Progress
Development moved smoothly. Each week, the client received new builds showing additional features. We started with login and signup, then moved to the main screen with a card view of all medical topics. As the front end took shape, we were simultaneously building out the admin portal so the client could start loading their own content.
The early builds used placeholder content, but as the backend came together, real data started flowing through. This iterative approach meant the client always knew where things stood and could provide feedback before we got too far down any path.
A Partnership That Keeps Growing
Blox Medical released the application shortly after the initial contract wrapped. It started generating revenue right away, and the client has continued to grow the product since.
As they began marketing to their target audience, new needs emerged. They have returned to Twin Sun multiple times for feature enhancements: bulk licensing for universities so nursing students can use the app in clinicals, CME credit tracking for continuing education, and tiered subscription levels. Each round of work has been driven by real market feedback as the product found its footing.
